In the early 1970′s, Volkswagen commissioned Porsche to design a new sports coupé for them. Porsche duly did as they were asked, and received their payment in return. But their design never made it into VW’s showrooms, instead a different destiny lay ahead for this car.

You could judge a car by the country of manufacturer, or at least the country from which the manufacturer originated. But with car companies buying each other, platform sharing, cost cutting, economic difficulties and other factors, things have changed.

VW SciroccoIn terms of production numbers, the Volkswagen group is the largest car company in the world. As well as the Volkswagen marque, it owns Audi, Seat, Škoda, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini, and in 2011 it has agreed to merge with Porsche.

This has presented the group with huge opportunities for platform sharing, and each marketing department with a challenge to differentiate what are essentially the same cars.
